What is it? A neuromodulator is a molecule that works to relax a muscle which is contracting. This contracting (or ‘scrunching’) can cause fine lines, dermal creases, furrows, folds, and wrinkles. Neuromodulators are a minimally-invasive, non-surgical way to improve the look of your skin from these dynamic (moving) lines that may eventually cause persistent and lasting lines and wrinkles.
Besides treating lines, certain Neuromodulators may also be used in other applications, like in the underarms for Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) or to treat migraine headaches and TMJ.
Who is it good for? Neuromodulators can be great for those who want an improvement in the look of their skin, but are not yet ready for (or do not wish to have) a surgical cosmetic procedure. Neuromodulators are often used in conjunction with other techniques like laser resurfacing, medical-grade facials, or dermal fillers to complement and enhance those results. We do not treat patients who are pregnant or nursing.
At Erickson Cosmetic Dermatology & Lifestyle Medicine, we currently utilize three different kinds of FDA-approved Neuromodulators. If you are comfortable choosing one of these brands, you may do so. However, It is not necessary for you to choose a Neuromodulator, as Dr. Erickson and her staff will recommend which type is right for your individual needs.
Depending on the condition of your skin and your desires, you may only need one treatment method or product to get your best result. For some, we may offer a combination of more than one technique or procedure for the best result.
What should I expect? Once you have discussed your needs with Dr. Erickson, your treatment can take place in less than five minutes. Typically, results are fully visible within 7 to 10 days. Usually, results last between three and four months.
Although less common, there is a chance of minor bruising associated with any injectable. To lessen your chances of bruising, we recommend discontinuing use of products like Aspirin, Blood-Thinners, Fish-Oils, Alcohol, Aleve, and any aspirin-based products like Alka Seltzer for 2 weeks prior to your procedure. Our office will provide you with more specific information on post-care, risks, safety information, and other considerations. Please call our office for a consultation to discuss how Neuromodulators might benefit you, and if you might be a good candidate for this treatment. We are always happy to consult you, and welcome your questions.
