What Are Dermal Fillers?

What Is JUVÉDERM® XC?
JUVÉDERM® XC is one of several hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers in the JUVÉDERM® product line. Though the main ingredient in every JUVÉDERM® filler is HA, each is strategically formulated to treat specific areas of the face and distinct aesthetic concerns.
Dr. Erickson most often recommends JUVÉDERM® XC for augmenting the lips and smoothing away nasolabial folds. However, she can utilize this filler to add volume in other areas, including the jawline, temples, and cheeks, as well. JUVÉDERM® XC can also be a good option for minimizing perioral lip lines and marionette lines.
JUVÉDERM® XC and JUVÉDERM® are identical except for the addition of lidocaine to the JUVÉDERM® XC formula. The lidocaine provides a numbing effect as the filler is injected for a more comfortable treatment experience.
Am I a Good Candidate for JUVÉDERM® XC?
Patients who are unhappy with prominent nasolabial folds and/or thin lips are often good candidates for JUVÉDERM® XC. However, Dr. Erickson will need to meet with you for a consultation to determine if JUVÉDERM® XC is the best way to achieve your aesthetic goals.
Your consultation will include a discussion of your cosmetic concerns, a physical examination of your facial structure and skin, and a review of your medical history. Based on the information you provide and her extensive experience, Dr. Erickson will identify the optimal care strategy for your unique needs. If there is adequate time, your JUVÉDERM® XC treatment can be performed during your consultation appointment.
Patients who are allergic to any ingredient found in JUVÉDERM® XC, those experiencing an active skin infection in the treatment area, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are not eligible for this procedure. Dr. Erickson will recommend more suitable treatment options in these cases.
What Does a JUVÉDERM® XC Procedure Involve?
Dr. Erickson performs this minimally invasive, in-office treatment at her downtown Chicago practice. Due to Dr. Erickson’s gentle injection technique and the use of a topical anesthetic, this treatment is associated with minimal-to-no discomfort.
To start, the treatment area(s) will be cleansed. Next, topical anesthesia will be applied. After 20 to 30 minutes, when the anesthetic has taken effect, it will be removed.
A surgical antiseptic will then be used to cleanse the skin before Dr. Erickson begins the injections. Based on the artistic approach best suited for resolving your cosmetic concerns, Dr. Erickson will use fine gauge needles or a cannula when performing your JUVÉDERM® XC injections.
What to Expect After a JUVÉDERM® XC Treatment
JUVÉDERM® XC is a no-downtime treatment. You can expect to get back to your normal daily activities immediately, with a few recommended exceptions for a day or two to help minimize swelling as much as possible.
Improvements from JUVÉDERM® XC are usually noticeable instantly, though you may have minor swelling post-treatment. To maintain your enhanced look, retreatment will be needed periodically. Results last six to nine months in most cases and possibly longer for some patients.
